Us Versus Them – All Fuel Injectors Are Not Created Equal

When it comes to fuel injectors, not all are created equal. Delphi recently compared the performance of its original equipment (OE) fuel injectors to that of a leading aftermarket manufacturer. The results? Delphi's injectors outperform in key areas such as flow curve, voltage, spray accuracy and material composition.

"Our replacement injectors are the OE part," says Tommy Thompson, product manager for fuel injectors at Delphi Product & Service Solutions. "We knew instinctively that our parts were better, and this research proves it."

Delphi tested the performance of its top applications to the competition. The testing was conducted in Delphi's research labs in Rochester, N.Y., over a three month period. It simulated normal wear and tear, as well as exposing the injectors to temperature and other environmental extremes.

The results show that Delphi injectors excel in:

  • Flow curve. Delphi injectors have 10% better linear flow (precise metering of fuel into the intake manifold) under varying operating conditions.
  • Voltage. Delphi injectors continue to operate well at low voltages, allowing the ECM to apply correct fueling during cold starts. Delphi outperforms the competition at low voltages.
  • Performance. The competitor's fuel flow open/close response times are slower by 0.2-0.4 milliseconds. Even this slight difference can cause performance gaps since most vehicles are programmed for precise delivery.
  • Spray. Delphi injectors have more accurate spray direction, maximizing the effectiveness of the fuel that's mixed for combustion in the engine. The competitor's spray hits the wall of the intake valve, resulting in late fuel arrival, which may cause increased emissions and vehicle hesitation.
  • Material composition. The materials used to construct Delphi injectors are chosen for their high strength and ability to withstand varying operating conditions. The competition often plates or coats its injectors' internal components, which is less durable.

Delphi injectors are designed and built with features to enhance combustion efficiency, to resist extremes in environmental conditions and to last longer

"These are the types of features technicians expect — and vehicles require — in fuel injectors," Thompson says. "Fit and function are always important. But it's ultimately the way the part performs, precisely and over time, that works to avoid comebacks. So, with Delphi injectors, our customers know they are getting the OE part and performance."

Because they are OE, Delphi fuel injectors are also easy to install. They have a single electrical connection, which can help save time. The Delphi line also features many unique injectors, such as Multipoint Flexible Injectors (MFIs) and Central Port Injectors (CPIs).

"We have more than 50 years of experience in engineering and manufacturing OE injector systems," Thompson concludes. "We leverage this knowledge and experience every day in the products we sell in the aftermarket. This, coupled with our TECHSOURCE training and education programs on advancing vehicle systems and technologies, gives us an advantage and provides our customers with the complete package."

Delphi's injector spray pattern (top) is more targeted and concentrated than that of the competition's (bottom), which is deflected into the intake.
